DOING MORE FOR THE SANTA CATALINA COMMUNITY & SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR PLANET

Community Projects

Clothing Market

With our friends at Panama Spanish School in town, we’ll be hosting regular clothing markets for the local community where your pre-loved items will be loved again by people who really need it. Make some space in your luggage and donate to us any good quality clothing and shoes you no longer wear. Kids and baby clothes and shoes are also great. The local kids will be responsible for managing the market day and gain valuable experience, where your items will be sold for small change.

Community Surf Lessons & BBQ

The sales from each clothing market will be put towards a community surf day where our surf coaches will give free surf lessons to the local kids and serve up hearty beach BBQ for everyone to enjoy.

English Education

For locals living in Santa Catalina, the ability to converse in English is a huge advantage since it opens up more employment opportunities for them. Our friends at Panama Spanish School offer a donation based ‘Conversation Table’ where locals and visitors can meet, converse, share and learn. All ages can participate. Themes are set for each conversation table along with an English and Spanish language sheet to help guide everyone. Even if you can’t speak a word of Spanish, your participation is still invaluable. Donations received go towards education equipment for Panama Spanish School’s English learning programs for locals. Conversation Tables happen every other week, check with us for their schedule.

Waluaa looked too good to be true and it’s even more beautiful in real life. It’s also extremely safe. Absolute paradise. Sunburn is your biggest risk. Sustainability is a priority at the hotel, retreat and the small village of Santa Catalina. You can enjoy one of the most beautiful places on Earth with the peace of mind that comes with working with the locals and the land, instead of exploiting them.

Sustainability

There’s no magic fix for the current threats to our oceans and earth, but we’re committed to taking small steps to be part of the solution. Here’s how we protect the beauty and fragility of our natural home:

  • Playa Estero (Estero Beach) beach clean up each week

  • Isla Santa Catalina clean up each week

  • No plastic straws

  • Avoid single use plastic bottles by:

    • Providing a chilled water station for you to refill your water bottle

    • Providing a fixed wall supply of shampoo, conditioner and body wash in your showers versus single use mini-plastic bottles

“The greatest danger to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”

— Robert Swan

Why is it that scuba divers and surfers are some of the strongest advocates of ocean conservation? Because they’ve spent time in and around the ocean, and they’ve personally seen the beauty, the fragility, and even the degradation of our planet’s blue heart.

— Sylvia Earle
